What is FSSAI Registration/License Renewal?

FSSAI license or food License is mandatory to operate any food business in India.

A registration or license granted under FSSAI regulations shall be valid unless otherwise specified, for a period of 1 to 5 years, as chosen by the Food Business Operator, from the date of issue of registration or license, subject to remittance of the fee applicable for the period and compliance with all conditions of the license.

FSSAI registration/license has a validity between 1-5 years; FBOs need to renew the registration/license prior to expiry.

The FSSAI Food License Renewal Online process can be done 180 days before the expiry date of the FSSAI food license or registration.

The renewal application filed between 30 days before the license expiry but before the license expires shall be accompanied by a late fee of Rs 100 per day for each day of delay.

After the original date of expiry, food businesses can renew registration/license up to 180 days by paying a penalty of 3-5 times of existing annual license/registration.

No renewal is allowed after the 180th day from the original expiry date.

Types of FSSAI Registration/License Renewal

There are three types of renewal, which are Basic FSSAI license/registration, State FSSAI license, and Central FSSAI license.

Login ID and password are a must while renewing the FSSAI license/registration.

  • Basic FSSAI License/Registration Renewal: Basic FSSAI License Renewal or many people call it “FSSAI License/Registration Renewal Form A,” is applicable for all food business operators who fall under basic registration criteria (below 12 lakhs turnover). The food registration renewal fees vary between Rs 100 to Rs 500, depending on the number of years that you choose.
  • State FSSAI License Renewal: State FSSAI License Renewal, or many people call it “FSSAI License Renewal Form B,” is applicable for all food business operators who fall under the State license criteria( between 12 lakhs – 20 crore turnover). The food license renewal fees totally depends on the following two criteria:
  1. Kind of Food Business ( Restaurant or Manufacturer or any other business).
  2. Validity of License Renewal ( between 1 year to 5 year).

Food License renewal government Fees can be Rs 2000 or 3000 or 5000 for one year depending on kind of food business.

  • Central FSSAI License Renewal : Central FSSAI License Renewal or many people call it “FSSAI License Renewal Form B” is applicable for all the food business operators falling under Central license criteria( above 20 crore turnover/ importer-exporter/ Operating in multiple locations). Government Fees for FSSAI Central License renewal is 7500 per year.

FSSAI Registration/License Renewal Fee

FSSAI renewal fees has two parts

a. If License is under expiry date then while renewing the FSSAI license you only need to pay fee.

b. In case your license is expired you’ll need to pay a late fees and FSSAI license renewal fee.

Late Fee for Renewal of FSSAI Registration/License

FBO should make the application to renew an FSSAI registration or license not later than 30 days before the expiry date indicated in the license. An applicant can file a renewal application 180 days in advance.

The renewal application filed between 30 days before the license expiry but before the license expires shall be accompanied by a late fee of Rs 100 per day for each day of delay.

This late fee is not applicable in case of Registration.

Penalty for Renewal of FSSAI Registration/License

To facilitate the food businesses to continue with same license number even after expiry date, it has been decided with the approval of Food Authority to enable Food Business Operator to renew the FSSAI License/Registration even after expiry date with following penalties:

a. Three times of the existing annual license/registration fee in the period – 1st day to 90th day from the original expiry date.

b. Additional two times of the existing annual license/registration fee (i.e. total 5 times) in the period – 91st day to 180th day from the original expiry date.

This provision of filing renewal application after the expiry date shall be subjected to online submission of due Annual Returns through FoSCoS by the licensed food manufacturer or importer.

No renewal shall be allowed after 180th day from the original expiry date.

Documents Required for FSSAI Registration/License Renewal

  • Documents Required for Renewal of License
  1. Any change in documents or information provided during grant of previous license.
  2. Certificate or Plan of Food Safety Management System being adopted (for units under Central Licensing it has to be a certificate from accredited agencies).
  3. List of workers with their medical fitness certificates.
  4. Name, qualification and details of technical personnel in charge of operation.
  • Documents required for Renewal of Registration
    1. Any change in documents or information provided during grant of previous registration.

Consequences of Non-renewal of FSSAI Registration/License

If the renewal application is not made within the validity period, the licence shall expire. In such a situation, the Food Business Operator shall stop all business activity at the food unit. The Food Business Operator shall apply for penalty upto the 180th day after the expiry of original date or a new food license/registration, if it wants to restart it.

Designated Officers may order an inspection before renewal if considered necessary for reasons to be recorded in writing.

FSSAI registration/license can be renewed online using FoSCoS in simple steps.

  1. Visit the FSSAI/FoSCoS Portal
  2. Select ‘Apply for Renewal’
  3. Fill in the Renewal Application Form
  4. Upload Required Documents
  5. Pay the Renewal Fees
  6. Submit the Application
  7. Inspection (If Required)
  8. Download Your Renewed License

FAQs

An FSSAI license can be acquired for a period ranging anywhere from 1 year to 5 years. 

It is mandatory to apply for licence renewal 30 days before the expiry of the existing licence. Non-renewal of licences can fetch a fine of ₹100 per day until the renewal is done.

You need to renew your FSSAI Registration/license before the expiry of its validity period. In case you end up missing the date of renewal of the application, you will have to apply for a fresh FSSAI license if you wish to continue your food business operations.

Basic Registration can be renewed within 7 working days and for state license and central license will take 30 days. However you can continue doing business with existing license number if you have submitted the application.

Yes, select business types, especially wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and e-commerce operators, can now opt for licenses valid up to 10 years. For small businesses, a minimum validity of 3 years is recommended for new registrations.

If you miss the renewal date, you can still renew within 180 days after expiry by paying a penalty. The previous late fee rule of Rs. 100 per day before expiry is discontinued.

From May 2025, FBOs can choose one of four fixed license renewal dates: 15th January, 15th April, 15th July, or 15th October. This streamlines planning and compliance for food businesses of all sizes
